PG Admission

PG Admission Process: Tata College, Chaibasa (Non-NEP / CBCS Pattern)

Unlike the Undergraduate (UG) curriculum which has transitioned to the NEP 2020 framework (FYUGP), the Postgraduate (PG) courses at Tata College, as of the current academic session, generally continue to follow the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

This means the degree is a traditional 2-Year Master’s Program divided into 4 Semesters, without the multiple entry/exit options found in NEP.

1. Academic Framework (CBCS System)

Since this is not aligned with NEP 2020:

  • Duration: 2 Years (Fixed).
  • Semesters: 4 Semesters (Final Exam at the end of every 6 months).
  • Degree Awarded: M.A. / M.Sc. in [Specific Subject].
  • No “Major/Minor”: You apply for a specific subject (e.g., M.Sc. Physics) and study core papers related to that subject along with limited electives.

2. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission into PG courses (M.A., M.Sc.) at Tata College:

  • Qualifying Degree: A 3-Year Bachelor’s Degree (Honours/Major) in the relevant subject from a recognized university.
  • Minimum Marks:
    • General/OBC: Minimum 50% aggregate marks in the Honours subject.
    • SC/ST: Minimum 45% aggregate marks in the Honours subject.
  • Stream Change: Generally, you cannot change your stream. For example, a B.Sc. student cannot apply for M.A. History unless the university notification explicitly allows it for specific interdisciplinary subjects.

3. Application Mode: The Chancellor Portal

All PG applications are accepted strictly online through the centralized Jharkhand Chancellor Portal. No offline forms are sold at the college counter.

4. Step-by-Step Admission Procedure

Step 1: Online Registration

  1. Login: Use your existing credentials on the Chancellor Portal (if you did your UG in Jharkhand recently) or create a new account.
  2. Fill Academic Details: Enter your UG (Graduation) Marks.
    • Critical Note: You must enter the marks of your Core/Honours papers carefully. The merit list is usually generated based on the percentage in the Honours subject, not the overall aggregate.
  3. Course Selection:
    • University: Kolhan University.
    • College: Tata College, Chaibasa.
    • Discipline: M.A. or M.Sc.
    • Subject: Select your Honours subject (e.g., Chemistry, Political Science).
  4. Fee Payment: Pay the application fee (approx. ₹500 – ₹800) online.

Step 2: Merit List Generation

  • Kolhan University releases a Merit List based on your graduation marks.
  • CUET-PG: While the Central Government pushes for CUET-PG, state universities in Jharkhand often still prioritize or exclusively use Graduation Marks for admission due to the high volume of local applicants. Always check the current year’s notification to see if CUET scores are mandatory or optional.

Step 3: Document Verification (Offline)

If your name appears in the Merit List, you must visit the respective department at Tata College (e.g., Dept of Physics) with the following documents:

  1. Printout of Application Form (from Chancellor Portal).
  2. Graduation Mark Sheet (Original + Xerox).
  3. Graduation Admit Card.
  4. College Leaving Certificate (CLC)Original is mandatory.
  5. Migration CertificateOriginal is mandatory (if you completed UG from a university other than Kolhan University).
  6. Caste Certificate (If applying under ST/SC/BC quota).
  7. Aadhaar Card.
  8. 3-4 Passport Size Photographs.

Step 4: Admission Confirmation

  • After the Head of Department (HOD) verifies your documents, they will update your status on the portal to “Approved”.
  • You must then log in to the Chancellor Portal and pay the Admission Fee online to secure your seat.

5. Fee Structure (Approximate)

Since it is a government constituent college, the fees are highly subsidized.

  • M.A. / M.Sc. (Non-Practical): Approx. ₹2,000 – ₹3,000 per year.
  • M.Sc. (with Practical): Approx. ₹3,000 – ₹4,000 per year.
  • SC/ST/Girls: often receive significant concessions on tuition fees (varies by state policy for the specific year).
