UG Admission Process: Tata College, Chaibasa (NEP 2020 Compliant)

The Undergraduate (UG) admission process at Tata College, Chaibasa, has undergone a significant transformation following the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The traditional “Honours” system has been replaced by the Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP).

All admissions are centralized and managed strictly through the Chancellor Portal (Jharkhand Universities), ensuring transparency and adherence to the reservation roster of the Government of Jharkhand.

1. The New Academic Framework (FYUGP)

Before applying, students must understand the structure of the course they are entering. Under NEP 2020, the curriculum is no longer rigid. It offers Multiple Entry and Exit options:

  • 1 Year (2 Semesters): Certificate in Faculty (e.g., Certificate in Arts).
  • 2 Years (4 Semesters): Diploma.
  • 3 Years (6 Semesters): Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 4 Years (8 Semesters): Bachelor’s Degree with Research/Honours.

Key Terminology for Applicants:

  • Major Subject: The primary subject of specialization (formerly “Honours”).
  • Minor Subject: A secondary subject to broaden knowledge.
  • MDC (Multidisciplinary Course): A subject from a different stream (e.g., A Science student studying History).

2. Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Qualification: Passed 10+2 or Intermediate examination from a recognized board (JAC, CBSE, ICSE, or other state boards).
  • Minimum Marks: Generally, 45% aggregate in 10+2 is required for General/OBC candidates to apply for a “Major” subject, though this may vary slightly by department.1
  • CUET vs. 12th Merit:
    • CUET (Common University Entrance Test): Kolhan University encourages admissions through CUET scores.2
    • Non-CUET (12th Marks): If seats remain vacant after CUET counseling (which is common in the region), the university opens the Chancellor Portal for admission based on 12th Board Marks. Students should keep a close watch on the university notifications for the “Non-CUET” application window.

3. Step-by-Step Application Process

Phase 1: Online Registration (The Chancellor Portal)

  • Website: All applications must be submitted via jharkhanduniversities.nic.in.
  • ABC ID Creation: As per NEP norms, every student must create an Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID via DigiLocker or the ABC portal before or during the application. This ID tracks your credits throughout your 4-year journey.
  • Form Filling:
    1. Create a “User Account” on the Chancellor Portal.
    2. Fill in Personal Details (Name, Father’s Name, DOB, Blood Group, etc.).
    3. Upload Documents (Photo, Signature, Mark Sheet, Caste Certificate).
    4. Course Selection: Select Kolhan University $\rightarrow$ Tata College, Chaibasa $\rightarrow$ Stream $\rightarrow$ Major Subject.
  • Fee Payment: Pay the application fee (approx. ₹100 – ₹500 depending on category) online.

Phase 2: Merit List & Selection

  • After the application deadline, Kolhan University releases a Merit List based on CUET scores or 12th aggregate marks (normalized).3
  • The list is published on the University Website, Tata College Website, and the College Notice Board.
  • Status Check: Students can check their selection status by logging into their Chancellor Portal dashboard. If selected, the status will change to “Recommended by College” or “Approved for Admission”.

Phase 3: Physical Document Verification

If your name appears in the Merit List, you must visit Tata College physically for verification. Admission is not confirmed until this step is complete.

Required Documents (Original + 1 Set of Photocopies):

  1. Printout of the Application Form (from Chancellor Portal).
  2. Class 10th Mark Sheet & Admit Card (for Date of Birth proof).
  3. Class 12th Mark Sheet & Admit Card.
  4. School/College Leaving Certificate (CLC/SLC) – Original Compulsory.4
  5. Migration Certificate (if coming from a board other than JAC) – Original Compulsory.5
  6. Caste Certificate (for ST/SC/BC-I/BC-II students seeking reservation).6
  7. Income Certificate (if applying for EWS or fee concessions).
  8. Aadhaar Card.
  9. ABC ID Printout.
  10. CUET Score Card (if applicable).
  11. Passport Size Photographs (3-4 copies).7

Phase 4: Admission Fee Payment

  • Once the college verifies your documents offline, they will “Approve” your admission on the portal.
  • You will receive a notification to pay the Admission Fee.
  • Log in to the Chancellor Portal again and pay the admission fee online.
  • Final Step: Download the Admission Receipt/Challan. This is your proof of enrollment.

4. Reservation Policy (Govt. of Jharkhand)

Tata College strictly follows the state reservation roster. This is critical for students in the West Singhbhum region:

  • Scheduled Tribes (ST): 26% (High priority in this region).
  • Scheduled Castes (SC): 10%
  • BC-I (Annexure 1): 8%
  • BC-II (Annexure 2): 6%
  • EWS (Economically Weaker Section): 10%
  • PWD (Persons with Disabilities): Horizontal reservation as per norms.

Do not use a cyber cafe owner’s email ID or mobile number.

All future communications regarding exams, admit cards, and results will be sent to the registered mobile number. Ensure you use your own (or a parent’s) permanent number.
